      <description>Deanne Stillman talked about her bookÂ [Desert Reckoning: A Town Sheriff, a Mojave Hermit, and the Biggest Manhunt in Modern California History], in which she tells the story of hermit Donald Kueck, who shot and killed deputy sheriff Steven Sorenson, sparking one of the largest manhunts in California's history.
C-SPAN's Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their "2013 LCV Cities Tour" in Palm Springs, California, from May 6-10 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Time Warner Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [Payback]</title>
      <description>Thane Rosenbaum spoke about his book, [Payback: The Case for Revenge], in which he argues that revenge and justice are not mutually exclusive ideas. In his book, the author contends that our court system would better serve victims of crimes by acknowledging and taking into account their feelings of vengeance in the adjudication of criminal cases. Mr. Rosenbaum presented his argument as part of a panel that included Federal Judge Denny Chin, New York Attorney General Eric Scheniderman, and attorneys Benjamin Brafman and Kathleen Hogan. The event was hosted by the Bar Association of New York City.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [The Lawyer Bubble]</title>
      <description>Steven Harper, adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law, talked about his book, [The Lawyer Bubble: A Profession in Crisis], in which he argues that that law profession is in need of reform. In his book, the author reports that there is an overabundance of lawyers, according to estimates by the Bureau of Labor Statistics 45,000 law students graduate each year and 73,600 legal jobs will be created this decade. Mr. Harper said that to remedy the situation law schools need to be more transparent about the realities of students securing employment and law firms need to devise a plan to better accommodate young lawyers. Steven Harper spoke at The Book Stall at Chestnut Court in Winnetka, Illinois.</description>

In March of 1963, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously decided in [Gideon v. Wainwright] that, when facing jail time, a defendant who cannot afford an attorney has the right to free representation. She spoke with [National Law Journal]'s Jenna Greene.</description>

      <description>Former [Boston Globe] correspondents Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill talked about their book, [Whitey: The Life of America's Most Notorious Mob Boss], in which they recount the life of Boston gangster turned FBI informant James "Whitey" Bulger. The authors' report on Bulger's criminal beginnings in the "Southie" neighborhood of Boston and his later operation of a crime syndicate the he ran while under the employ of the FBI. Bugler eventually fled Boston and went into hiding; he was arrested in 2011 in Santa Monica, California and currently awaits trail on nineteen charges of murder. They also responded to questions from the audience at Porter Square Books in Cambridge, Massachusetts.</description>

      <title>Book Discussion on [The Amistad Rebellion]</title>
      <description>Marcus Rediker, history professor at the University of Pittsburgh, talked about his book, [The Amistad Rebellion: An Atlantic Odyssey of Slavery and Freedom], in which he recounts the slave revolt aboard the Spanish schooner, Amistad in 1839. The author reported that four days after the ship set sail the captives revolted, killed the captain, and took command of the ship. The Amistad was eventually commandeered by the U.S. Navy and the men aboard were sent to prison in Connecticut, where they awaited a trail heard by the Supreme Court. Their case, defended by John Quincy Adams, resulted in their release and return to Africa. Mr. Rediker spoke at the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia.</description>

Mr. Bleyer recalls his travels from Greece to Philadelphia and his discussions with the likes of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia as he takes a critical examination of the Constitution. The attack, executed by Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, killed 168 people. The author contends that the bombing was preventable and that the FBI mishandled the case, deaf to the radical right's dialog in the lead-up to the act. Mr. Gumbel's research, with the assistance of his co-author, Roger Charles, includes the use of government documents, a correspondence with Terry Nichols, and over 150 interviews with individuals ranging from the prosecution and defense teams to members of the radical right and law enforcement officials. Andrew Gumbel responded to questions from members of the audience at Full Circle Bookstore in Oklahoma City.</description>
