Energy Security

Anne Korin, editor of [Energy Security], spoke at the morning session of the 30th National Conservative Student Conference about reducing dependence on foreign oil. She compared the value of oil in the present to salt's status as a valuable commodity in the past. The value of salt decreased as technologies such as refrigeration, canning, and electricity surpassed it as a food preservation method. Encouraging and supporting the development of oil alternatives will reduce the value of oil in the same way. Following her remarks, Ms. Korin responded to questions from the audience.

Young America's Foundation held its 30th National Conservative Student Conference at the Marvin Center of George Washington University for students to learn about conservative ideas seldom taught in college classrooms. This was part of a morning session.

Book Discussion on [Before the Lights Go Out]

Maggie Koerth-Baker examines the current and future state of energy issues in the United States. The author reports that there is no one answer to the future of energy infrastructure and that a more energy efficient world will not be a utopia but will be better than if no action is taken. She posits that the same economically driven thinking that created the country's current energy issues would be the force behind the changes in production and consumption over the next twenty to forty years. She responded to questions from members of the audience at Barnes & Noble in El Cerrito, California.

Book Discussion on [Energy Victory]

Robert Zubrin talked about his book, [Energy Victory: Winning the War on Terror by Breaking Free of Oil.] He argued that the United States is subsidizing a war against itself because of its dependence on oil, a resource controlled by its enemies. He says that if Congress passed a law requiring all new cars sold in the United States to be flexibly fueled, OPEC's control on the world's transportation fuel supply would be diminished.

Robert Zubrin is the president of Pioneer Astronautics and president of the Mars Society, an organization dedicated to the exploration and settlement of Mars. He is the author of numerous nonfiction and science fiction books including [The Case for Mars: The Plan to Settle the Red Planet and Why We Must, Entering Space,] and [Mars on Earth.]
