Newsmakers with Tim Pawlenty

Tim Pawlenty talked about the financial sector/business community response to the "fiscal cliff" and the U.S. economy. Former Minnesota Governor Pawlenty ran for president early in 2012, and after he left the race, he became co-chair of Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign for president. In September 2012 he left that position. The Financial Services Roundtable announced on Sept. 20 that Mr. Pawlenty would be its President/CEO. The Financial Services Roundtable is made up largely of banks and credit card companies.
"Fiscal Cliff" refers to the impending tax increases and budget cuts at the end of 2012 if Congress could not reach a new budget agreement.

The Economy as a Democratic Party Issue

Mr. Tsongas served as a Massachusetts U.S. Senator from 1979-85. He is currently practicing law in Boston. Mr. Tsongas has been making public appearances throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire recently. He is expected to be the first Democratic candidate to announce he will run for the 1992 presidential election. Some questions have been raised over his health, as he left politics in 1984 to undergo treatments for lymphoma. His doctors have said that his cancer has been cured. In his speech, Mr. Tsongas said, "The major issue I think we Democrats are going to have to face up to is economics." Important economic issues include foreign competition, jobs, revenue sharing, and taxes. He said that polls show the public does not think the Democratic Party cares about the economy, which means the party needs to do a better job of proving this is a very important issue. In reference to the presidential election, Mr. Tsongas said, "The notion that George Bush can't be defeated is, in my mind, the usual conventional wisdom based on today, not on what's going to be the case in November of 1992."

American Economic Policy

Former Senator Tsongas spoke to the National Press Club on his unannounced candidacy for the presidency in 1992. Sen. Tsongas, who is expected to officially announce his candidacy for the 1992 Democratic nomination for president on April 30, is the only Democrat other than Gov. Wilder of Virginia who has openly sought consideration for the nomination. In his remarks, the former senator spoke on his reasons for running, including a desire to provide debate on important national issues, including the national debt and the trade deficit. He also mentioned his book, A Call to Economic Arms, a treatise on the problems of the current U.S. economic policies with a possible economic policy to solve them. Sen. Tsongas labelled himself "an economic Paul Revere," who wants to rally the American people to economic "independence." He stated a desire to change the Democratic party to the party of economic rebirth and preeminance through sound economic thinking.

Dole Economic Plan Critique

Dr. Tyson gave the administration view of the economic plan of Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole. She criticized the plan for being a remanufactured supply-side proposal which she argued did not work in the 1980s. She predicted that it would explode the deficit and increase interest rates which would hamper the economic growth which the plan is supposed to foster. She also championed the president's economic record over the past four years and outlined his agenda for the next four years, including further deficit reduction and targeted tax cuts. After her remarks, she took questions from the audience.

National, State and Local Economic Policies

Governor Cuomo, governor of New York since 1983, discussed economic issues facing states and the nation before a meeting of the New York Financial Writer's Association. Governor Cuomo recently cut nearly $600 million from the New York state budget, but the budget talks have stalled in the New York state legislature. Gov. Cuomo called for a "new vision" of economic growth which is more inclusive than the Republican policies of the past ten years, and said the economic downturn is actually external indications of greater policy and leadership weaknesses inherent in the U.S. as a nation. He stated the U.S. needs new standards for national economic growth, criticized the economics of the Reagan administration, and argued that true economic growth will result when more people have jobs to earn wealth to increase consumer spending.

Business and Economics Council

Former Senator Tsongas addressed an audience of business and political leaders in Denver, Colorado during his campaign for the 1992 Democratic nomination for president. The main issue of his campaign, as stated by Sen. Tsongas, is the economic viability of the United States. He said the current administration's economic policies, which create prosperity by running a huge deficit, are generationally immoral and are only forestalling an economic collapse. He rejected both the laissez-faire economic ideology of the Republicans and the anti-business instinct of the Democrats, and called for a new aggressively pro-business stance for the Democratic party.
