Candidates for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination and others spoke before the voting began at the Republican Party Iowa Straw Poll held at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. It traditionally takes place in August in years without an incumbent Republican president running for re-election. Iowa residents over the age of 18 years old can vote for one of the nine Republican candidates on the straw poll ballot, but only six will speak at the event, including Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Thaddeus McCotter, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, and Rick Santorum. Newt Gingrich, John Huntsman and Mitt Romney will only appear on the ballot.
There was a brief signal loss due to inclement weather during Mr. Gerard's remarks.

Iowa Republican Convention

Governor Branstad opened the straw-poll meeting. Then several of the people on the ballot spoke successively during the voting. Mr. Alexander spoke about the need for Republicans to describe what they propose for the future of America rather than simply criticizing the Clinton adminstration. He mentioned such things as moral regeneration and less government and more individual initiative. Mr. Buchanan spoke about the need for Republican unity and the need for a vision that combines morals and traditional conservative values. Mr. Cheney criticized the Clinton administration's approach to government with too much bureaucracy and its foreign policy. He contrasted this with Republican notions of individual initiative and a strong foreign policy. Mr. Gramm criticized the Clinton adiministration's policies, but he also emphasized the need to distinguish the Republican platform from the Democratic platform on such issues as taxing and spending. Mr. Kean criticized the Clinton administration's "betrayal" of its campaign promises. He also emphasized the importance of governing the "right" way instead of simply winning the right to govern. Ms. Martin severely criticized Democratic incompetence, but she also emphasized the a positive Republican vision, especially one that includes middle-class Americans.
