      <description>AIDS activists and researchers discussed the current state of AIDS research and infection in the U.S. They also discussed new figures from the Centers for Disease Control on AIDS mortality. Slides were shown to illustrate the figures on exposure to AIDS and the number of cases among Americans and among different categories of Americans. Dr. Gayle explained why there is a decline in AIDS deaths in the United States. Following the individual presentations, panelists took questions from the press.</description>

      <title>HIV Prevention Marketing Initiative</title>
      <description>Secretary Shalala spoke to reporters about halting the spread of HIV with a television advertising campaign that informs watchers about AIDS and condoms. Ms. Lavelle stated that this was a "stepped-up commitment by the federal government" to control risky behavior by young adults. Dr. Satcher discussed reaching a generation at risk and Ms. Stokes commented on the various efforts to reaching young adults with the message about the dangers of HIV and AIDS.</description>
