Debt Reduction and the Federal Budget

Obama administration cabinet officials testified on the impact of sequestration on their departments. Some of the services that would be cut included Agriculture Department inspections, airport customs, special education programs, and Transportation Security Administration agents. Secretary Donovan said that veterans receiving housing assistance would be displaced. Secretary Napolitano said that maintaining national security would be huge problem. Travelers passing through customs would face longer wait times. Mr. Werfel said that food inspections would be cut, leading to greater economic pressures and rising food prices.
"Sequestration," a legal procedure in which every federal agency has the same percentage of its budget cut in order to take back deficit spending, was agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011 and scheduled to happen on March 1, 2013.

Secretary Arne Duncan and state education officials testified on the reforms implemented under "No Child Left Behind" (NCLB) state flexibility waivers. Kentucky Education Commissioner Holliday also said that the automatic sequestration spending cuts would deeply affect his state's schools, students, and teachers through loss of jobs and services.

2013 Inaugural Ceremony

President Obama addressed the nation following his swearing-in during the public inauguration ceremony for his second term on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol. In his remarks he stressed national unity and called on lawmakers cooperate with one another to confront issues such as climate change, job creation, civil rights, and budget issues, saying "We cannot mistake absolutism for principle, or substitute spectacle for politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned debate." The ceremony also included the musical performances, a poetry reading, the oaths of office for president and vice president.
Because the official inaugural day of January 20 was on a Sunday, the president was officially sworn into office in a private ceremony at the White House the previous day.

Energy Security

Business, political, and retired military leaders talked about the report they were releasing, "National Strategy for Energy Security: Harnessing American Resources and Innovation." The report from Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE)	made long-term policy recommendations for energy security. They agreed that oil dependence was the greatest threat to U.S. economic prosperity, national security, and fiscal stability. In the SAFE report, the writers of the report suggested maximizing oil and gas production, reducing consumption and improving conservation, which could boost revenue and reduce debt. This event took place in the Newseum.
