The House Oversight Committee looked at Bank of America’s merger with Merrill Lynch -- a deal struck during the height of the financial crisis in September 2008 - and the role of federal financial assistance and government officials. Witnesses included Sheila Bair, Chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, who talked about her concerns over the merger as well as new bank regulations under consideration by Congress. The panel also heard from the head of enforcement at the Securities and Exchange Commission, who discussed some of that agency’s litigation against Bank of America. close
