Committee members met to discuss the status of the William Weld nomination for the ambassadorship to Mexico. Committee Chairman Senator Jesse Helms (R-North Carolina) defined the gathering as a “meeting” rather than a hearing and gave examples of other presidential nominees who have been blocked by Senators before having a confirmation hearing. Senator Richard Lugar (R-Indiana) and other senators urged that Senator Helms convene the meeting to discuss the matter of Mr. Weld. close
