On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth. In a flight lasting just under five hours, he orbited the earth three times in a spacecraft named Friendship Seven. This 1963 NASA film biography, The John Glenn Story, includes interviews with people who knew him growing up in New Concord, Ohio. Then the astronaut is shown preparing for his space flight. Included are interior shots aboard the Friendship Seven space capsule, and comments as he works inside the capsule during this mission. close
