Mr. Buchanan talked about his book, The Death of the West: How Dying Populations and Immigrant Invasions Imperil Our Country and Civilization, published by Thomas Dunne Books. He said that declining birth rates in the United States and Europe, coupled with population explosions in Africa, Asia and Latin America are affecting the balance of world power. Most “first world” nations, including Japan, have begun to collapse. He stated that unchecked immigration is draining the strength of these countries and endangering their chances for economic survival. In writing the book, Mr. Buchanan drew on United Nations population projections, recent U. S. census figures, the New York Times, and expert policy studies to support his position. A lively question and answer period followed Mr. Buchanan’s remarks.

Mr. Buchanan ran for the Republican nomination for president in 1992 and 1996 and was the Reform Party’s presidential candidate in 2000. He was a founding member of three public affairs shows, The McLaughlin Group, The Capitol Gang, and Crossfire.
