Greg Grandin talked about his book Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City (Metropolitan Books; June 9, 2009). He recounts Henry Ford's creation of a factory town in the Amazon in 1927 to produce rubber. The town, Fordlandia, complete with movie theaters and Model Ts, was rejected by the indigenous population and abandoned by Ford in 1945. Mr. Grandin responded to questions from members of the audience.
Greg Grandin is the author of several books, including The Last Colonial Massacre: Latin America in the Cold War (University of Chicago Press, 2004). Mr. Grandin is a history professor at New York University and a Guggenheim fellow. He has served on the United Nations Truth Commission that investigated the Guatemalan Civil War.
