The House expressed its condolences on the death of Representative Claude Pepper, (D) Florida, as a mark of further respect, the House adjourned in his memory. The House also agreed to a resolution permitting his body to lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda. By unanimous consent, the Speaker, Representative Jim Wright, Jr., (D-Texas), addressed the House on a point of personal privilege, announcing his intention to resign as Speaker and as a member of the House. close
