Coast Guard Commandant Robert Papp talked about the U.S. Coast Guard’s diverse missions, including its role coordinating the federal response to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and its role during hurricane season. Admiral Papp became the commandant on May 25, 2010, succeeding Thad Allen. The Coast Guard became a division of the Homeland Security Department following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Topics included the Coast Guard’s place within the Department of Homeland Security and its work in the U.S. and abroad, including safeguarding Iraqi oil platforms in the Arabian Gulf.
