President Obama held a town hall meeting in College Park, Maryland on the University of Maryland Campus. Before he answered questions from the audience, he talked about the economy and ongoing negotiations with congressional leaders on the budget and raising the debt ceiling. He warned that a U.S. default on its debt would probably increase the deficit because of higher interest rates and slower economic growth. He also said White House lawyers had ruled out the option of increasing the debt ceiling without permission from Congress.
