President Bill Clinton and others participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the Women In Military Service For America Memorial. President Clinton said the memorial will tell the stories of hundreds of thousands of women in military service. “It makes a long overdue downpayment on a debt that we will never fully repay,” he said. The memorial is meant to honor about 1.8 million women who have served in the U.S. military. Congress authorized the memorial in 1986 and was scheduled to be dedicated in 1997. close
