A hearing was held on the report released the previous month by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which announced that there were 56,300 new HIV infections in the United States in 2006. This figure, using new methods, was forty percent more than estimated. Topics included challenges to effective intervention programs such as budget, policies that restrict evidence-based programming, and apparent political and ideological interference.
