A panel discussion was held on the future of feature writing instead of the advertised topic of how write feature stories. The history of feature writing was discussed and the changes being brought about by factors such as the decline of newspapers, lack of resources, online sites, the fracturing of the audience, technological changes, the decline of literacy, and the shift of news and political campaigns from ideas to images. The panelists responded to questions from members of the audience. Michael Sartisky moderated.
This panel included Katherine Bouton with the New York Times, Kevin Allman of Gambit Weekly, and Chris Hedges, columnist for Truthdig.com.
"The Story Behind the Story: The Art and Craft of Feature Writing" was a program of the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, held at 1:00 p.m. CT in the Bourbon Orleans Hotel.
