    Michelle Lanier of the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission talked about Anna J. Cooper, who was born into slavery and went on to become an author, educator and speaker and one of the most prominent African American scholars in US history. Cooper was a native of Raleigh and attended St. Augustine's Normal School and Collegiate Institute (currently St. Augustine ...University) in Raleigh. She lived to be 105 and is buried in Raleigh.
