Buddy Roemer in Video Library

Buddy Roemer announced for the Republican nomination for president this week. Here is a clip of Roemer as a Democratic representative in 1982. It is his first appearance in the Video Library and one of the earliest House tapes that we have. He is speaking on budget cuts.

James T. Molloy, 1936-2011

James Molloy, the last Doorkeeper of the House of Representatives, died this week. As Doorkeeper, one of his official duties was to announce the president of the United States to the assembled joint membership and escort the president to the podium. In this clip from 1986, one can see Mr. Molloy announcing the president.

Mr. Molloy, who served as Doorkeeper from 1974 until the position was abolished in 1995, sat down with C-SPAN in 1989 to discuss his duties.

Library of Congress Featured on C-SPAN

The Library of Congress is featured in an original C-SPAN documentary. This documentary takes you into and behind the scenes at the world’s largest library. You will learn the history of the institution as you tour of the Library’s Jefferson Building. You will see some of the treasures found in its collections of rare books, photos, and maps as well as the thousands pages of presidential and personal papers. And you will hear how the library uses technology to preserve and expand its holdings. The program airs at 9 PM Eastern Sunday evening July 24. Prime Minister’s Question Time Observes 50th Anniversary.

This week marks the 50th anniversary of the British Parliament Prime Minister’s Question Time. You can read the history and memorable moments of PMQ in the London Independent. Each Sunday evening at 9:00 PM, C-SPAN carries the weekly telecast of Prime Minister’s Question Time. Congrats to the Brits on the anniversary of this venerable institution. It is a favorite of many C-SPAN viewers and users of the Video Library.

House Observes Rep. Dingell’s 85th Birthday

On July 8, 2011 on the House floor, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) rose to comment on Rep. John Dingell’s (D-MI) 85th birthday. He observed that Dingell had served “five-eights” of his life in the House. During the tribute, the House-controlled cameras allowed a rare reaction shot of Dingell during the applause. The tribute can be seen here.
