New Improved Search

June 21, 2013

The C-SPAN Video Library has upgraded and improved its search function. It is faster, more accurate, and allows more drilling down or filtering to get you to the results you want. The first thing you will notice is that it is faster. We have used the latest search technology to achieve this result. Second, it zeroes in more precisely on events such as the 1996 Republican Convention or the Clinton State of the Union Address. Before, these results might have been lost in all the results returned. Now they appear on top.

Finally and most importantly, it reveals a number of ways you can filter programs. At the top you will find these filters.

You can select on Programs, People, or Text to further refine your search. You also have the choice of Best Match, most Popular, Newest, or Oldest.

Down the left-hand side you have many more ways to filter. We have used all the index categories of our database to allow you to filter on the intersection of these terms. This lets you to quickly find events where Obama was travelling or spoke on foreign policy or appeared with a particular person. The possibilities expand.

Try searching for Obama, then select person and Obama, then select Joe Biden and you will see how many times Obama appeared with Biden. You can then select other presidents and vice presidents to see how many joint appearances they had. You can further narrow this down to their dates of office.

Another new change is in the Browse page. This option is found at the top of the page.

This option exposes all the categories that can be browsed. So, if you want to browse all Booknotes and then look for all programs on Early American History, you can browse Tags and find the 28 programs.

Try it. We hope you will be as excited about it as we are.

  • FINALLY-I HAVE BEEN MUCH PLEASEDTHAT THE C-SPAN VIDEO LIBRARY EXISTED BUT NOW I’M MORE PLEASED THAT I WILL NOT HAVE TO YELL AT MY COMPUTER SCREEN WHEN I USE IT. THANK YOU, THE SEARCH IMPROVEMENT IS LIKE FINDING A GOOD ROAD MAP WHEN YOU ARE LOST.

  • I only use IPad like millions of others moving away from computers and am locked out of appreciating the library as it is in Flash format
