Father of Public Relations
October 14, 2010
Edward M. Bernays is considered the father of the field of public relations. In 1988, he was interviewed as part of a program at American University. At the time, he was 97 years old. His insights and observations are worth listening to. He even recounts advice to counter rumors that he gave to President Coolidge. It is one of the gems hidden in the Video Library. Don’t miss it.
You can view it here.

Bernays was an evil SOB. Helped set up our society based on fraud. PR is sick; Bernays a disgrace. May his memory be shamed…

Psychology in political theory and practice often have horrible social consequences. If you are interested in not only bernays but how psychology has effected US and global culture find the documentary work of adam curtis. He is the only person talking about politics as a direct consequence of belief and is one of the more glaring omissions in american public discourse.

The interview of Edward Bernays was very interesting. I would be interested in a category of cspan videos called “advice” which included similar interviews or other presentations. Thanks.

My attorney here in North Andover, MA was appointed his guardian ad litem during his final years.
Linda Kaloustian’s efforts became the basis for a book on the career of Mr. Bernays, “The Father of Spin” by Larry Tye. It is the definitive recounting of his life and work in New York City and Cambridge, MA
