Jon Stewart Uses Video Library

October 28, 2010

The cable talk shows have discovered the C-SPAN Video Library and use it extensively to research previous statements of politicians. Jon Stewart uses it quite a bit in the Daily Show. A piece by Hank Stuever, in the October 28, 2010 Washington Post, observed this phenomenon by commenting: “The Daily Show’s saving grace is its trenchant media criticism in the form of damning evidence from news video vaults [such as the Video Library], a true art form that the show makes look deceptively easy. Nothing worked better in this week’s shows than a video montage Tuesday [October 16, 2010] evening that caught Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) posturing about Washington’s systemic failures and outmoded ways again and again — in clips dating back nearly every year to 1989. Devastatingly funny, and the reason “The Daily Show” still thrives.” The McCain video can be seen here; another example from September 23 can be seen here. We expect that others will begin imitating Stewart and find the Video Library a very valuable an easy-to-search “news video vault.”

  • I was there, at the Rally to Restore Sanity (and/or Fear), and saw that there is a recording of it in the C-Span video player, but that version is low resolution. I’d like to buy or download a DVD quality version to show my friends what they missed.

  • Love whole J Stewart Show, but think use of video is most effective and amusing segment often.
C-SVL very useful and fun for my own purposes, too!
