Presidential Addresses on Afghanistan
June 22, 2011
When President Obama addresses the nation tonight on Afghanistan, it will be the seventh presidential address by the fourth president over thirty-two years that has been captured in the Video Library. A presidential address is classified as a speech to the nation that is carried on multiple television networks. Usually they are from the Oval Office, but this is not always the case.
The most recent address was by President Obama delivered on December 1, 2009 at West Point. This is when the president announced the deployment of an additional 30,000 troops.
President Bush gave three addresses to the nation on Afghanistan including his address to Congress after the 9/11 attacks.
President Clinton also spoke to the nation about military strikes at targets in Afghanistan.
Finally, in a different era, President Jimmy Carter spoke about the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
You can research U.S. policy toward Afghanistan using the Video Library. We found these speeches by using an advanced search (format = address and any field = Afghanistan). There are many, many more programs on this topic.
