Rachel Swarns presents a genealogy of first lady Michelle Obama’s family. Ms. Swarns reports that Mrs. Obama’s ancestry is multiracial and is composed of those who fought in the American Revolution and Civil War and blacks who faced Jim Crow laws and relocated from the South to the North in the Great Migration. Wendell Willkie, Presidential Contender

Amity Shlaes, James Madison, and David Willkie talked about the life and career of 1940 Republican presidential nominee Wendell Willkie (1882-1944) from the Rush County Historical Society. Wendell Willkie lived in Rushville, Indiana, and ran his presidential campaign from there. The lawyer and utilities executive had never before run for office. After loosing to President Franklin Roosevelt, he then became his informal representative to Britain, the Middle East, the Soviet Union, and China. In 1943 he wrote One World, the story of his travels. Video clips included speeches and campaign ads. There was an August 1940 audio clip of President Roosevelt. Remarks by Senator Lugar were pre-recorded. The historians responded to telephone calls and electronic communications.
“The Contenders: They Lost the Election But Changed Political History” is a C-SPAN series of live programs about 14 presidential candidates before 1996 who lost the election but who had a lasting effect on U.S. politics.
Book Discussion on FDR and Chief Justice Hughes

James Simon recounts the confrontations between President Franklin D. Roosevelt and United States Chief Justice Charles Evan Hughes. The author reports that Roosevelt’s New Deal proposals were consistently challenged by the chief justice as unconstitutional. Following President Roosevelt’s reelection in 1936, he introduced legislation to restructure the Supreme Court, effectively packing the court with pro-New Deal justices. Chief Justice Hughes rebuked Roosevelt’s plan and the proposed legislation was defeated in Congress. James Simon responded to questions from members of the audience at Pickwick Book Shop in Nyack, New York.
Cincinnati's Black Brigade and the Abolition Movement

This week on The Civil War, we hear from two more speakers at the U.S. Capitol Historical Society’s 2012 Civil War Symposium. First, author Nikki Taylor addresses the issue of citizenship among free African Americans, and the story of Cincinnati’s Black Brigade. Then, history professor Diane Barnes talks about the abolition movement.
This portion of the symposium is about an hour and 20 minutes.
The Presidency and the Supreme Court

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor delivered the keynote address at “The Presidency and the Supreme Court” conference. She spoke about conflicts between the judicial and executive branches. Former Justice O’Connor began her talk by recounting her meeting with Eleanor Roosevelt as a young girl.
“The Presidency and the Supreme Court” was the second national conference sponsored by the nation’s twelve Presidential Libraries, their foundations, and the National Archives.
Politics and Economics in the 1970s
Airing Time:
This week, history professor Judith Stein teaches a graduate-level seminar on politics and economics in the 1970s. Professor Stein examines the 1974 resignation of President Nixon and Jimmy Carter’s defeat of President Ford in the 1976 Presidential Election. Also discussed are President Carter’s attempts to deal with inflation and the energy crisis. This class from the City University of New York Graduate Center is just under two hours.
White House of the Confederacy, Part 1 Preview

During the Civil War, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his family lived in a Richmond, Virginia mansion. Now referred to as “the White House of the Confederacy,” the residence was saved from demolition in 1896 and since 1988 has been restored to it’s wartime appearance. American History TV visited to learn about the Mexican War veteran and U.S. Senator who became leader of the Confederate States of America. This is part one of a two part program.
David Hume Kennerly Oral History Interview
Airing Time:
Photographer David Hume Kennerly recalled his coverage of Richard Nixon from his 1968 presidential campaign through his 1974 resignation. President Ford then asked him to join his White House and document his presidency. At the time, Mr. Kennerly was only in his twenties, even though he was already a veteran Vietnam combat photographer and a Pulitzer Prize winner. Other topics included the assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy and his service in Vietnam.
This interview was conducted by Timothy Naftali on January 28, 2008, in Yorba Linda, California, for the Richard Nixon Presidential Library.
Pabst Mansion, Part 2 Preview
Airing Time:
Johan Gottlieb Frederick Pabst was born in 1836 in Saxony, Germany. Seeking a better life, his family moved to the United States in 1848, eventually ending up in Milwaukee.
Frederick Pabst worked his way up from cabin boy to steamship captain on the Great lakes. In 1862 he married Maria Best, daughter of German brewer Phillip Best.
Soon after, Captain Pabst purchased half of the small Best brewing company, and by the 1890's the renamed Pabst Brewing Company was the largest lager brewery in the world.
Next, a visit to the restored gilded-age mansion of Milwaukee beer baron, Captain Frederick Pabst. This is part two of a two-part program.
The Life and Legacy of Former Slave Robert Smalls

A panel discussion was held on the life of Robert Smalls. Robert Smalls was a slave during the Civil War who commandeered a Confederate transport ship to escape to the north, where he performed valuable services during the war. During Reconstruction, he served South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives for five terms, attempting to pass civil rights legislation and fighting for equality in the armed forces. On the 150th anniversary of Smalls' escape with his wife, children, and 12 other slaves, one of his descendants participated in a discussion about his life and exploits. The panelists responded to questions from members of the audience at the Morris Brown AME Church.

Studying Military History

This week on The Civil War, the final session from a conference organized by the Virginia Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission. The theme of this year’s gathering was Leadership and Generalship in the Civil War, and the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia hosted the conference. University of Virginia history professor Gary Gallagher gave this year’s closing remarks in which he spoke about the significance of studying military history. This is about 40 minutes.

Thomas Kidd recounts the role religion played in the American Revolution. Professor Kidd contends that it was the belief in the right to worship freely that brought the colonists together, from conservative evangelists to liberal deists, and remained a cohesive element following the Revolutionary War. Thomas Kidd presented his book at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana.
Book Discussion on Leak: Why Mark Felt Became Deep Throat
Airing Time:
Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the June 17, 1972, Watergate break-in, historian and researcher Max Holland talked about his book, Leak: Why Mark Felt Became Deep Throat. In the book he critiques the view of FBI Associate Director Mark Felt presented by Bob Woodward. Using the Woodward and Bernstein papers at the University of Texas, Mr. Holland argues that contrary to popular notions, Mark Felt selfishly used journalists to discredit FBI director L. Patrick Gray in the hope that he would be appointed to the top spot; and that President Nixon’s resignation was an unintended consequence. Mr. Holland also compares the Woodward and Bernstein book All the President’s Men to their original reporting notes, and he argues that they changed key information. Mr. Holland used slides as he spoke and responded to questions from members of the audience at the Kansas City Central Library.
